About Project SEPIT

STORY

Project SEPIT was created by Ketut Arimbawa and Tribal Leader Sang Made Puanya in 2017

They wanted to protect their local environment for future generations. Project SEPIT commenced service in 2017 in Ketut’s hometown of Tampaksiring and was officially recognized by the Government of Indonesia on May 29, 2019.

Deeply troubled by the vast amounts of plastic and trash he saw while attending the various ceremonies in and around Tampaksiring, Ketut was moved to take action to reduce this waste. He gathered the leaders of his community to discuss what actions could be taken to tackle the problem. Ketut was given the green light by the community leaders to start a movement aimed at reducing the plastic (and trash) in Tampaksiring.

The first step for Ketut was to ensure that the ceremonies held in his local community were green

This meant no plastic was left behind while being gathered and disposed of safely. Because much of the plastic that cleanup volunteers were gathering was unhygienic, the idea to use tongs made of bamboo came about. Tongs are called ‘sepit’ in Balinese, thus the ‘sepit’ not only served as a name giver but is proudly displayed in the organisation’s logo. Thus Project SEPIT was born.

Ketut’s first recruits for the cleanups were his friends and family, but after partnering with local School District 6, its students were added to the ranks of people cleaning the streets and waterways of Tampaksiring.

Since then, dedicated volunteers and students walk the streets, jungles of Bali to clean up the plastic and other trash every Saturday morning using sepits or bamboo tongs and large reusable bags. Once the cleanup is done, they separate and sort the plastic and trash into the correct bins that Project SEPIT has created and distributed.

When Ketut discovered a communal piece of land that was not in use, he thought that a permaculture garden would fit perfectly there. This led him to take the project towards a more holistic approach.

The community leaders, excited by the amazing progress of Project SEPIT so far, graciously granted a portion of the land.

SEPIT’s core management team and volunteers used the land to establish an office. From there they have expanded the plastic cleanup services as well as other projects in order to further support, educate, and assist in the growth of the local area and surrounding communities.

Eventually a seminar room will be built there as well, where workshops can be held to educate attendees on permaculture farming techniques, plastic recycling and other environmental topics. Volunteers will work in the fertile garden to produce delicious fruit and vegetables for the benefit of the community.
